Hi everybody, I'm Mike. I have 32 years playing experience and 22 years teaching experience ranging from private lessons in my home to music stores such as The Guitar House to colleges and universities. I am fluent in most styles of music with my specialties being Classic Rock, Blues, Folk, Jazz, and Classical guitar. The most important thing, however, is for the student to learn to play the music he or she likes. So, I encourage students to bring in recordings of music they like and we will begin working on this music as soon as possible. In this sense, the student is the boss. Lessons, above all, should be fun and satisfying for the student. In addition to my playing and teaching experience, I have excelled academically in the area of music theory with a PhD in music theory from the University of Iowa almost finished. Music theory might loosely be defined as the study of musical structure or an understanding of “how music works.” In addition to taking the mystery out of music, theory is essential to becoming a good player, songwriter, or improviser, and, best of all, it's easy! I promise! I, therefore, emphasize music theory in addition to the physical mastery of the guitar in all my lessons. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about me, my background, or teaching methods, or anything else. Thank you. Contact info: Mike Jones (319) 354-3843 michael-d-jones@uiowa.edu |
